Leafs and tropical tortoises: an observation

Abstract

A short introduction regarding the use of foliage in keeping chelonians is followed by a case description of keeping star tortoises (Geochelone elegans, Sri Lanka form) during the European winter. It's shown how the animals spent a resting period (aestivation) beneath a cover of oak leafs. According to my observation the use of the leafs helped to relieve the symptoms of a developing disease and to restore the health of the male tortoise.
