The Care and breeding of the Red-Headed or „Cherryhead“ Red Foot Tortoise,
Geochelone carbonaria
Abstract
The article deals with keeping and breeding the red-headed form of
Geochelone carbonaria.
Differences between those and animals originating in Columbia are highlighted, including differences in
their habitus, their behavior and necessary keeping conditions. The author comes to the following conclusions:
While it is true that the cherryhead is a somewhat smaller race than some of the other redfoots, they are not
really dwarfs either. Head color is somewhat variable but is usually some shade of orange or coral. Some
exceptional individuals are an intense red. The origin of Cherryheads is not Paraguay. They seem to be able
to tolerate cooler temperatures than the northern forms and are not as negatively affected by dry weather.
Males can be extremely aggressive towards one another and this must be taken into consideration when
putting a group together.
