Catastrophe in southern Spain – 300 hectares of a tortoise reserve devastated

Abstract

Two tourists who camped illegally at the Sierra de la Carrasquilla (Murcia, Spain) caused a bush fire that destroyed an area of 300 ha, including 25 ha of the finca „Las Cumbres de la Galera“ owned by the foundation „Fondo Patrimonio Natural Europeo“. Scientists from the universities of Murcia and Alicante estimate that 2,500 adult tortoises have died.
