Confusion and mistakes with identification of the desert box turtle Terrapene ornata luteola Smith & Ramsey, 1952

Abstract

In literature, many different characteristic marks are given for identifying desert box turtles of the sub-species Terrapene ornata luteola and distinguishing it from the nominate form. Actually the given information is contradictory and so this article gives additional hints about typical variations of this subspecies. Photographs of different specimens taken in the wild are provided and a mistake involving two mixed up rivers that has led to confusion about the range is corrected.
