Die Dreistreifen-Scharnierschildkröte – ein Opfer des vermeintlichen Nutzens
The Chinese three-striped box turtle – a victim of its supposed use
Abstract
The Chinese three-striped box turtle is a perfect example of an Asian turtle in crisis. In the traditional
Chinese medicine it is used for treating different health problems including serious diseases like cancer.
A clever marketing ploy increased the belief of potential consumers in the alleged curative powers of this
turtle, which indicates that there exists an interaction between traditional medicine and market. The
possibility of supplying the market with captive-bred animals and/or re-introducing animals from breeding
facilities to save this species from extinction are discussed.
Key words
Testudines: Geoemydidae,
Cuora trifasciata, use as traditional medicine, market, extinction
