Breeding goals and breeding methods

Abstract

The first part of the article focuses on the basics of heredity and the problems which may be associated with inbreeding, explaining the mathematics for the evaluation of ancestor-loss- and inbreeding coefficients by some examples. The second part provides examples for the setup of favourable breeding strategies for small breeding groups in order to minimize the loss of genetic information and to keep genetic variability at its possible maximum. These examples explain in detail how to select individual breeding pairs from a given breeding stock in order to protect certain genes with a minimum of inbreeding.
