Abstract
Red-eared sliders are frequently kept under suboptimal conditions, where even the
legally obligatory minimum keeping conditions and regulations are not fulfilled. I
present the regulations for keeping
Trachemys scripta elegans in
Switzerland, the European Union (in general), and Austria and Germany (in
particular) and I give as an example how they can be kept in outdoor or/and indoor
enclosures. Information about feeding, keeping, group sizes, separation of the
sexes and overwintering are given. Many red-eared sliders are found in animal
welfare enclosures of turtle friends and their organizations, so it is questionable
whether one should breed them or perhaps better to help to find homes for the
surplus specimens. But for those who want to breed, the article gives additionally
information about incubation and raising hatchlings.
