Outdoor overwintering of the common musk turtle (Sternotherus odoratus)

Abstract

2 common musk turtles hibernated unscheduled in my outdoor enclosure in West-Germany, North-Rhine-Westphalia. For subsequent winters, I decided to let the turtles hibernate in the same place, but under my control. In this article, I give advice on how to prepare the enclosure, to check and control the animals, and what to do if the winter is too warm for continuous hibernation.
