First experiences in raising and maintaining the Florida chicken turtle, Deirochelys reticulata chrysea, Schwarz, 1956

Abstract

In Europe, chicken turtles are rarely found in private collections, unlike the situation for several other North American freshwater turtles. After a short introduction to the 3 subspecies that comprise the genus Deirochelys and their characteristic markings and patterns on the soft skin, the raising of young Deirochelys r. chrysea in captivity is described, with special emphasis on feeding and preference for hunting live fishes in this turtle.
