Increased relative humidity results in smooth carapaces: How is it practically achievable during maintenance of tortoises

Abstract

After a short introduction describing the water supply for various tortoises under natural conditions, we provide some simple methods how to provide locally an increased amount of humidified air at the resting places of growing tortoises in order to avoid humidity-stress associated with pyramiding. Furthermore, we provide the first histological information how pyramiding develops and how the different tissue components respond to dehydration. In addition we discuss its relation to the dietary requirements for young and older tortoises.
