Morphologische Beobachtungen an Testudo graeca ibera auf der Insel Kos,
Griechenland bezüglich des Schwanzschildes (Supracaudale)
Observations on morphology of (Testudo graeca ibera) on the island
of Kos (Greece) – considering the supracaudal shield
Abstract
During a herpetological survey at the island of Kos, the authors observed
Testudo graeca ibera. The portion of tortoises that show a divided
supracaudal shield was analysed. This question is of interest because in the
literature this is one of the so-called typical characters used to separate it
from other European species
Testudo hermanni (s.l.). From 115 specimens
examined, 8 showed a divided supracaudal, thus 7 % in total. Furthermore
significant differences exist between sites. In one place only 2 of 60 had this
characteristic, but 5 of 24 at another site. Additionally the authors remark on
unexpected differences in morphology (Marginalia) in one population.
