Der Aufbau von Metapopulationen erscheint unerlässlich: Ein Kommentar

Installation of metapopulations seems to be indispensable: a comment

Abstract

In the past years, wild fires devastated large parts of several landscapes, including natural reserves around the Mediterranean sea. In 2007, the numbers of these fires culminated especially in EU countries such as Italy and Greece. Most of the fires did not occur by accident but were men made in order to clear land for further development or housing. This is because devastated landscapes need no longer protection or protected burned landscapes may be reforested by EU-sponsored reforestation programs. However, rare, protected and endangered species mayl be lost forever. Because there is no guarantee that the burning will stop, this comment argues for the establishment of metapopulations outside of their natural habitats in order to enhance the chances of survival and their availability for future re-introduction programs.
