Die Pantanal-Plattschildkröte, Acanthochelys macrocephala, erobert den Dornbuschtrockenwald
The Big-headed Pantanal Swamp Turtle, Acanthochelys macrocephala, enters the dry thorny scrub forest
Abstract
The natural habitat of
Acanthochelys macrocephala is the Pantanal,
whose main part is situated in Brazil and reaches into north Paraguay and
Bolivia. In this article we describe how and why this strictly aquatic turtle
species expands its range into the arid thorny bushes dry forest, the natural
habitat of
Acanthochelys pallidipectoris. We provide a map that shows
all published observations of both species adding our own unpublished findings
as well as reliable data from local habitants in Paraguay and construct a map
which clearly shows the expanding movement of the range of
A.
macrocephala to the South West.
