Abstract

In three visits in 2007 I had to observe a dramatic change in the habitat of Summerland Key. The pond in which Kinosternon baurii had been a common species had an extreme low water level with a reddish brown color. In October I observed additionally pinkish algae all over the surface. Except for one hatchling there had been no observation of Kinosternon baurii anymore. As possible reason I discuss the efforts of the State of Florida to removed all of the non-native vegetation from the area, especially the Brazilian Pepper, Schinus terebinthifolius.
