Experiences with keeping and breeding the African spurred tortoise, Chersina angulata

Abstract

The main subject of the article is the maintenance and breeding of the African spurred tortoise. Information about the conditions of a combined indoor and outdoor husbandry and of their seasonal nutrition is given. Furthermore, this tortoise's interesting behaviour is described, especially my observation of „normal“ interactions between male and females in a husbandry model without separation of sexes. Advice on how to avoid stress and environmentally associated health problems are given. Difficulties with artificial incubation and successful incubation in the enclosure are described. Problems in raising hatchlings are discussed.
